About Us
Charlotte and Govind Acharya were married in a beautiful ceremony at Greens, Fort Mason, in San Francisco, California on April 13, 2003. You can look at some of the wedding pictures here. Although they liked living in Oakland, they moved to Ithaca, New York in August 2003. In 2006 they bought a house and their first child, Mirabelle was born. See pictures of her on the family web log.
Govind was born at the Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC in 1973. Though born in Virginia, he lived the first 17 years of his life in Hurricane, West Virginia (with minor lengths of period in Montgomery and Nitro, West Virginia, Benton Harbor, Michigan, and Cincinnati, Ohio). After graduating from Hurricane High School in 1991, he moved with his parents to San Diego. He attended Southwestern College, then transferred to UC San Diego in the spring quarter of 1994. He spent 4 months living in Central America (just outside of San José, Costa Rica) learning Spanish and overall just having a fabulous time! After earning his undergraduate degree at UC San Diego in 1997, he began working at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, where he was a Planner/Scheduler. He moved with his then girlfriend, Charlotte Bell, to Oakland after spending the summer in Singapore, Bangladesh and India in 2000. He began an MA program in Economics at San Francisco State University, which he completed in 2003. He is now a PhD student at the Dept of Applied Economics and Management in Cornell University.
Charlotte was born at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Vallejo, California and was raised in nearby Napa. During her junior year in Vintage High School, Charlotte traveled to St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia. A prolific violinist, Charlotte was a member of the North Bay Philharmonic and the La Jolla Symphony. She moved to UC San Diego in 1994 and graduated in 1998. She started, but chose not complete a PhD in Biochemistry in the University of Washington and moved back to San Diego. After traveling for 3 months in Singapore, India and Bangladesh, she moved with her future husband, Govind, to Oakland, worked at Therasense for a couple of years before joining the Friends of Sausal Creek, as their Operations Manager. She was already in the Board of Directors for the organization. In July of 2003 she and Govind moved to Ithaca, New York after an adventurous cross-country trip. She is now a researcher at the Institute for Genomic Diversity and a graduate student researching invasive plant management at Cornell University.
